Illustration: Man trying to understand shipping costs.

These days, it seems, Amazon and many other online retailers offer “Free Shipping” to entice you to place an order.  But Bodyline continues to add shipping charges to your order; what gives?

First, let’s be honest — there’s no such thing as truly “free” shipping. Those freight charges just don’t appear on your order summary. In many cases, the price of the product has been increased a bit to cover the costs of delivery.

Secondly, very large retailers like Amazon and others ship so many packages that they are able to negotiate very low rates with the carriers who deliver your orders. Those low rates can be absorbed more easily by the large retailers through many options such as price adjustments you may not notice. Small, family-owned and operated businesses like Bodyline simply can’t get those rates because their sales volume isn’t sufficient to command those kinds of carrier concessions.

Bodyline chooses to be transparent about its shipping costs. We keep our freight costs as low as possible by negotiating with our carriers and  offering volume discounts to achieve packaging and shipping efficiencies. The shipping charges are then clearly identified and added to your order. (If you are eligible for lower negotiated freight rates available through your company’s carrier contracts, you always have the option to request third-party billing and have Bodyline charge your company’s shipping account for delivery costs for your order.)

Most of Bodyline’s orders are shipped via UPS or FedEx, and costs are calculated based upon the package’s “Dimensional Weight” (LxWxH, divided by 139 = the shipping weight). This calculation makes the freight cost very high relative to the actual weight of some of our lighter products. For example, the box that holds eight Back-Huggars measures 29”x15”x11”and weighs 11 pounds; that will be converted to a Dimensional Weight of 34.4 pounds and rounded up to a billed weight of 35 pounds. As you can see, this calculated weight results in a devastating cost increase to ship foam-type products.

We make every effort to optimize shipping costs and still offer you the best possible quantity discounts. In 2019, your orders will include a base shipping charge of $9 per order, to which $1.50 per product ordered will be added. Thus, if you order eight products, your shipping charges will be $21. This slight increase does not cover the full cost we are charged by the freight companies, but it will help us to defray some of the increased cost being passed on to us.
